Bottom Paint & Underwater Hull Cleaning
The condition and age of a vessel’s bottom paint can affect both cleaning frequency and cleaning requirements.
Typical bottom paint lifespan in Florida is approximately 12 to 36 months, depending largely on the vessel’s location and local marine growth conditions.
Vessels in high-growth coastal areas typically experience a bottom paint lifespan of approximately 12 to 18 months. Vessels located in brackish water or areas with lower marine growth may experience a lifespan of approximately 24 to 36 months.
The actual lifespan of bottom paint is also heavily influenced by the quality of surface preparation performed by the yard, the brand and type of paint applied, and the number of coats applied during each haul-out period.
It is standard practice during each haul-out to apply additional coats of bottom paint to the scum line and transom, as these areas typically experience faster paint degradation due to direct sunlight and heavier marine growth compared to the underside of the vessel, which is protected from direct sunlight.
